You may be keeping up at work and running out of energy at home. Or you may need more context, clearer expectations or a different way to communicate. We want to understand what your day actually takes.

Therapy, team care and assessments

Irene’s story

Making sense of a later autism and ADHD diagnosis

Irene receives an autism and ADHD diagnosis in her forties. Some past experiences begin to make sense, but she still has a busy home life, a demanding job and a long list of strategies that have never quite fitted.

Read Irene’s story

Her OT makes room for what the diagnosis means to her, without assuming she wants to change everything. Irene chooses two starting points: recovering after work and making appointments easier to manage.

They look at sensory demands, task switching, expectations and the effort of masking. Irene tries a quieter transition after work, written appointment reminders and a single place for things she needs to take with her. She keeps the strategies that help and leaves the others.

In this example, understanding the effort behind daily tasks helps Irene ask for clearer communication and more realistic demands. Support does not erase difficult days or change who she is. The focus is her own priorities, comfort and participation. OT can support daily life after diagnosis; it does not replace the diagnostic process or other care she may need.

Frequently asked questions

Can I seek OT support after a late autism or ADHD diagnosis?

Yes, you can enquire at any stage. We can explore what the diagnosis means for your daily life and which demands, routines or environments you want help with. There is no expectation to work on everything at once, and no single way to be autistic or have ADHD.

Can OT help if I am burnt out or constantly exhausted?

OT can help you examine daily demands, sensory load, routines, rest and the supports available. We will work within your current capacity and review what is helping. Ongoing or new exhaustion can have several causes, so medical review may also be needed. There is no fixed recovery timetable.

Will therapy focus on making me mask or fit in?

Our focus is your comfort, autonomy and participation in things that matter to you. We can explore changes to expectations and environments, rather than assuming you should simply tolerate more. You can question a goal, decline an activity or ask to change the approach.

What happens at a first appointment?

We start by discussing what matters to you, what is taking effort and what you would like support with. You can bring notes or a support person, ask for breaks, or tell us how you prefer information to be shared. We explain the scope, fees and consent arrangements before care begins.
